With every new year comes the opportunity for a fresh start, a new chapter, and renewed sense of motivation for welcoming habits that feel fulfilling and support the growth we want. Hold onto that! But ditch the New Year’s resolutions that perpetuate a sense of being inadequate or critical of self.

How can we be intentional when preparing ourselves to venture into a new year with eyes on appreciation of self *as well as* our new chapters? It’s all in the language we use to speak to ourselves and the expectations we set in the year to come. Still unsure what we mean? Check out the examples below -

What NOT to do: “My plan is to start a new diet and lose 20 pounds”

Better: “I want to utilize intentional movement at least 30 minutes a week”

Best: “I’d like to be more in tune with my hunger cues and foods that make me feel good. Maybe I’ll talk to a nutritionist for support!”

Tips for Setting Intentions vs Resolutions

  • Shifting your perspective from looking at your goals from a deficit lens to a strengths-based lens helps diminish the stigma and judgment you direct at yourself when looking to the future for areas you’d like to grow in.

  • Be careful not to set the bar too high for yourself. One of the biggest deterrents from maintaining new habits is feeling deflated when we do not reach our possibly unrealistic, lofty goals.

  • Remember that growth doesn’t have to be all on you! Who can help you on your path toward your goals? It’s always okay to ask for help, and often our biggest successes are bolstered by our supportive community.

What *intentions* will you be setting for yourself this year? Might you be looking to improve your communication with your romantic partner? Are you hoping to reduce your anxiety or depression symptoms? Maybe you’re hoping to figure more out about yourself as an individual returning to college from your childhood home.
