FAQs From Teens

Will my therapist tell my parents what I talk about in counseling?

In short, no. “Client confidentiality” means that it is your therapist’s legal obligation to keep your therapy sessions, and the things you share, private - yes, even from your parents, their own partner, friends, and family. However, if a client expresses the desire to harm themselves and makes it clear that they will act on this, then your therapist may break confidentiality in order to protect your safety and wellbeing.

Will my therapist get me?

The bond you feel with your therapist is dependent upon a number of factors, including but not limited to their race, gender, sexuality, age, mental health specializations, experience, and more. Because our practice is teen-centered our staff is also young and relatable to help build that therapeutic bond. Check out our Meet Us page!

What is the first step? How do I get started?

Ambler Counseling Center’s Clinical Director, Kellie, does a free initial phone consultation with all of our potential clients. This allows everyone to briefly tell us what they want to work on.

To contact us you can…

  • Fill out the Get Started! at the bottom of this page.

  • Send an email to info@amblercounseling.com.

  • Call our office (267) 664-0734.

Then, we will find a time that is best for you to speak with Kellie. Even if we are not the best fit, we have a wide network of resources to help point you in the right direction. Ambler Counseling Center is here to be a resource for not only our current clients but for everyone that needs help on their therapeutic journey.

Will I have to give up social media?

Of course not! But your therapist may want to work on your relationship with social media, how it may affect your body image and self-esteem, among other things, and for what reasons you use certain platforms. Therapy is all about looking inward to find the motivations and reasons behind what we do, and social media is certainly no exception.

Will my therapist refuse to work with me if I engage in underage drinking?

Absolutely not. Dependent on our lives, experiences, and households, we all have specific and nuanced relationships with substances, and therapy with Ambler Counseling Center is judge free. We are here, however, to help you move beyond unhealthy relationships that are no longer serving you by finding the root of the issue, together.

What about marijuana?

Once again, no. But as with alcohol use, marijuana use as a minor may indicate to your therapist an area that needs exploring. Ambler Counseling Center uses a harm reduction model that has strategies aimed to reduce negative consequences associated with substance use.

Does my teenager need therapy?

Adolescence is the time when a teenager starts to figure out who they want to be and what they want for their future.

This is a time filled with many possibilities, which is both exciting and stressful. Whether your teenager is concerned about performing well academically or if they are battling teenage depression, therapy may be the best way to sort through these concerns.

Teenage counseling can help your teen navigate through this stage of their life. Therapists use adolescent therapy techniques that can be beneficial for someone who is in this transitional period.

The staff at Ambler Counseling Center is young, relatable, and are professionals who have a unique skill set to work with the teenage population. For a free consultation, send a message on the Meet Us page!

How do I find a good therapist for my teenager?

Therapists can specialize in certain areas, such as teen counseling, LGBTQ issues, teenage girl issues, grief and loss, and many more.

Depending on the specific concern of your teenager, the first step would be to find a therapist who specializes in that area.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the therapy process, you can ask Ambler Counseling Center, we can address any questions or concerns you may have. For a free consultation send a message on the Meet Us page!

Can a Sixteen-year-old go to therapy?

Yes, and therapy may be a good option for a teenager who needs to work through their emotions and thoughts surrounding their concerns.

Although teens may be hesitant to discuss their “stuff” with parents or family members, a therapist may be that neutral party they need to open up to.

Ambler Counseling Center provides both individual and group therapy for teens. Your teen may benefit from joining a group of other teens who are going through similar issues.

For available groups, you can check out the Teen Support Group page!

What are the three types of therapy?

Along with individual therapy, there is group therapy and family therapy.

Individual therapy involves being one-on-one with the therapist and allows for a strong bond to be formed.

Group therapy involves therapy with other members who are going through similar problems as you.

This helps form a connection with the therapist and other members of the group.

Lastly, family therapy is held with members of a family and can be beneficial in creating a healthier dynamic between family members. Depending on your current concern you can choose from the listed therapies for help.

To learn more about the different therapy options you can check out the Ambler Counseling Services page!
